Storage of hazardous substances with spill sumps. Why a sump?

The function of a sump is to protect underground water beds from hazardous polluting substances in case of leaks. This secondary containment system is able to prevent and reduce pollution.

The collection minimum volume should be equal to the biggest of the stored container volume and not less than one third (1/3) of the total volume stored. Wherever substance storage is located in an underground water protect area, it is specified that the entire stored volume is to fit inside the sump (100%).

Example n.1

Total value of the stored substances: 1800 Litres
( 1/3 of 1800 lt. = 600 lt. )

The storage capacity of the largest container is 1000 litres
1000 is greater of 600 - according to the current regulation the sump must contain minimum 1000 litres

Example n.2

Total value of the stored substances: 4500 Litres
( 1/3 of 4500 lt. = 1500 lt. )

The storage capacity of the largest container is 1000 litres
1500 is greater of 1000 - according to the current regulation the sump must contain minimum 1500 litres

The mentioned rule is not valid in case of storage of waste oil, in this context will be necessary a collection volume of the sump equal to 100% of the stored liquid.

International customers

The regulations concerning the spill capacity may vary in the different countries, please check with your local authority and send us your specific requirements in order to verify the conformity and develop a customized proposal.

Compatibily and building materials

The materials used to make the sumps shall be compatible with the products stored therein.
Steel sumps (Fe360) can be used to store most chemical substances. For the storage of corrosive substances such as acids/bases shall be used sumps in Polyethylene. If no specific indications are reported in the resistance tables, sump material can be the same as that of the container used for storing the substances. Sumps are to be installed on flat surfaces in areas protected against rain water.
The indications specified on the individual substance safety sheets are to be scrupulously adhered during substances storage or transfer.

Water protection

Legislative Decree N.1952 April 3, 2006
This decree discipline, with reference to the Law of 15 December 2004, no. 308, the following subjects:
a) in the first, the procedures for the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the integrated environmental authorization (IPPC);
b) in the second, soil conservation and combating desertification, protection of waters against pollution and management of water resources;
c) in Part three, waste management and remediation of contaminated sites;
d) in the fourth air protection and the reduction of emissions into the atmosphere;
e) in the fifth, the claim for redress against environmental damage.

Presidential Decree 151/11, the new regulation for fire prevention procedures

The Presidential Decree n. 151 of 01/08/2011, the "Regulation on the simplification of the rules on procedures relating to fire prevention pursuant to Article 49, paragraph 4 quater of Decree-Law 31 May 2010, n. 78, converted with amendments by Law 30 July 2010, n. 122 ", published in the Official Gazette no. 221 of 22/09/2011, contains important and substantial changes to the fire prevention procedures for the issue of the Fire Prevention Certificate (CPI) by the Command of the Fire Brigade.
The simplification Regulation indeed completely repealing both the Presidential Decree n. 37 of 12/01/1998 that the D.M. 16/02/1982 (on the determination of activities subject to fire prevention inspections), introducing in its Annex I a new list of activities subject to the controls of the Fire Brigade, divided into three categories, named A, B, C:
1. in category A were included those activities with "technical regulation" reference and characterized by a limited level of complexity, related to the consistency of the activity, crowding and the quantity of material present;
2. category B were included the activities present in A, how to type, but characterized by a higher level of complexity, as well as activities without a specific technical regulation reference, but with a level of complexity lower than the assumed parameter for the superior category, that is, C;
3. category C were included activities with a high level of complexity, regardless of the presence or absence of technical rule, subject to the Fire Prevention Certificate (C.P.I.).

New plants: Presentation Fire Project

The institutions and individuals responsible for the activities listed in Annex I group B and C, are required to apply, with the appropriate application to the control of the territorially competent fire service, the review of projects for new installations and settlements. Similarly you have to proceed in the event of subsequent modifications to existing plants, involving burden of fire safety conditions.
The specific procedures and documentation constituting the fire prevention project to be verified by the Technical part of the Command of the Fire Brigade must be established by special decree of the Ministry of Interior to be issued.
As it regards the timing, the control of the VV.F. It will examine the draft within 30 days, possibly requiring additional documentation, in answer to the compliance of the project within 60 days from the date of submission.
